Every year, on the 6th, 7th and 8th of January in Petrousa/Drama Babiden takes place . It's roots are lost in the depths of time and it's aim is good luck, fertility, fruitfulness and the liberation of earth from the shackles of winter.The dominant symbol of the custom is the "camel" - Zacharias. The symbolism of this cardinal animal with its unparalleled resistance to hunger and thirst under adverse conditions shows the adventures of man in his life and time and his determination to continue to struggle against deficiencies and deprivations.Men(Arapides) dye their faces with burned corks -soot , wear goat skins, and goat headdresses with horns, and bells on their waist. The noise they cause, drives evil spirits away and invites nature to wake up and prepare for spring.
